Network Transformation: The gradual (or not) transition from today’s more traditional static network of hardware-based management functionalities right up to flexible, dynamically software-based network management capabilities (Orchestration, Network -and Service Management Framework))

Five key ETSI standards groups are actively working on the building blocks needed to transform todays telecoms network into a self-sustaining and autonomous resource that can adapt to future evolving requirements with a minimum of human intervention.

 

The discussion on the best way to meet the requirements for the management of future networks has never been as relevant as today. 

Are you asking yourself

  • Is orchestrion still needed?
  • What is best setup to manage a network / service end – to – end?
  • Do we need solution based on standardized or by open source communities?
  • What is the role of standards and of open source?

Whilst the industry is still having heated, sometimes controversial, discussions on a paradigm change regarding network and service management, in ETSI the topic has already been tackled and the way forward is mapped out.

 

If you wish to find out what comes next, look no further than the ETSI session on ‘Network Transformation’ on 14 October from 2pm as part of the SDN NFV World Congress in The Hague, where these questions will be addressed.

 

ETSI, the standards people, have developed specifications for NFV, MEC, ENI and ZSM that are facilitating the entire network and building the path towards a fully evolved 5G core.

 

The session kicks off with presentations by the respective group Chairmen who provide insides into the holistic ETSI approach to stimulate a discussion on the way forward.  In the second, deep focus session, the respective ETSI groups present their joint vision on collaboration both in ETSI and outside towards other SDOs and Open Source projects.

 

The session concludes with a panel moderation animated by TelecomTV’s Director of Content, Guy Daniels.

Prior to joining Red Hat, Hanen worked at Ericsson as innovation specialist designing cutting-edge IoT solutions for mobile networks. Obinna Egonu is a technical leader well versed in driving customer success with service providers across EMEA, Americas and Asia-Pac regions. Vincent is currently leading the Enterprise Architecture arm of Globe Telecom, Inc and is based in the Philippines. Ensuring the enterprise maximizes the use of existing application capabilities, monitoring of emerging technology and timely adopting these are his daily mantra. Vincent is also leading an infrastructure transformation initiative that seeks to build a unified cloud infrastructure that would serve both internal & external customers.

 

Ignacio Garcia-Carrillo is the global leader for business development at HPE’s Telco Segment and NFV Solutions in the Hybrid IT business group. In this role, Ignacio is responsible for the go-to market activities and budget, linking the business group with customers and sales, obtaining market feedback to enable HPE’s infrastructure business in the telecommunication segment, and financial reporting and strategic analysis. New Hardware Architecture for Intelligent Transformation of the Edge

 

Applications such as autonomous cars and IoT are creating enormous amounts of data at the edge. Traditional telecommunications architectures transmitted most data back to centralized data centers for processing. But this centralized approach will no longer be feasible given the vast amounts of data being created outside the data center. New customer applications and services will require rapid decision making and low-latency responses. 

 

Edge servers and edge-optimized accelerator hardware are enabling new architectures that move processing functions closer to the data. Power-efficient FPGAs or computer vision inferencing hardware can perform immediate processing at the far edge. More significant processing can be done at “nearby” central offices with flexible pools of servers, storage, and accelerator hardware. Join this session to see new hardware optimized for creating scalable and flexible multi-access edge computing (MEC).

He also leads the enterprise System Technology Innovation Center, where he focuses on creating innovation that truly matters to customers. As Chief Architect, he has overall responsibility for the design of Lenovo enterprise systems and software, including both traditional datacenter and new software-defined strategies. He is a Master Inventor with 48 issued or pending patents in such areas as systems management, blade server technology, and automated provisioning.

 

Before joining Lenovo, he was Chief Architect at IBM, where he led the architecture and development of software and firmware for PureFlex, IBM’s first converged system. He worked at IBM for over 18 years. He is the author of many technical publications and conference presentations and a member of the DMTF Board of Directors. He worked for Philips, Lucent and Megisto Systems – a US based start-up company. Sitting on the Edge: Cable Operator Access Network View

 

Recent moves to distributed access architectures that distribute some or all of the functionality of the CMTS/CCAP are changing the way cable operators build their networks, by significantly reducing space and power required in technical sites. This can potentially allow the space to be freed up and reused for other purposes, which in combination with recent emergences of cloud computing and push towards the edge opens up huge windows of opportunity for cable operators that are effectively already sitting on “the edge” of networks.

Ian Bartlett leads a team of Solution Architects in Intel's EMEA Sales and Marketing Organisation. He and his team are responsible for working with telecom service providers and Intel's partners to transform network infrastructure via the adoption of cloud technologies and Network Function Virtualisation (NFV).

 

Ian joined Intel in 1996 as a quality engineer, and has since held a variety of technical roles in the sales organisation. For much of the last decade Ian has worked on telecommunications projects with OEMs and service providers in Europe.

Ian received his Bachelor's degree in Solid State Physics in 1992 and a PhD in Materials Science in 1996, both from the University of Wales, UK.

About Speakers:

 

Cuneyt Yucel has professional experience spanning over several sectors in his previous career steps the longest one being in telecommunications. He is working for Intel since 2007 where he started in WiMAX organization, which was followed by the development of Telco vertical as a new channel for Retail and Data Centre. Currently he is Partner Development manager across EMEA in Network Transformation area. He is a mechanical engineer; he has completed his undergraduate studies in Bogazici University in Istanbul, and he had made his graduate studies in Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, in Canada.

 

Prayson Pate is ADVA Optical Networking's chief technology officer for Ensemble and an evangelist for network functions virtualization (NFV). He speaks at industry events and writes posts and articles to inform, educate and entertain. These include The Real CTOs of NFV and The Real Innovators of Networking series.

Prayson received a master's degree in electrical and computer engineering from North Carolina State University and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Duke University. Prayson has contributed to standards bodies such as the MEF and IETF. He is a named inventor on nine patents.

 

Nicolas Thomas is an ETSI NFV pioneer and ETSI representative for Fortinet. Also part of ETSI Security week selection committee for AI, Nicolas has co-founder many opensource and standard communities and has played an active role in the NFV development since 2011. 

He has held former positions at Canonical and HP and has been influential in the telecom industry transformations with over two decades of experience. 

His versatility and passion have led him from mastering network functions, to virtual machines, to cloud and elastic services. He continues to contribute his expertise through various organizations including SAForum, Scope Alliance, Picmg and CP-TA and is hands-on in architecting Telco, OpenStack and Cloud platforms. 

 

Valerio Martini has extensive technical and sales experience with networking technologies where he has been working with “Italian passion” for the past 15 years managing large projects at an EMEA Level. He previously worked with Juniper and HPE as a Senior Network Consultant covering Network Security, Cloud integration, SDDC/SDN Overlays, NFV and Virtualization.

Valerio brings a strong academic background holding a Master and a  PH.D. in Telecommunication/Networking from Sant 'Anna University in Pisa, Italy. More recently Valerio has been working on innovative research regarding SDN and Automation that has been published by prestigious organizations such as the IEEE!

 

Mark Iskra is Technical Marketing Director for Nokia’s Nuage Networks with a core focus on virtual network performance and NFV for OpenStack. Mark’s vision is to broaden the horizon of SDN at Nuage Networks by working closely with strategic partners bringing disruptive technology to OpenStack. He has worked closely with Intel to leverage QAT crpto acceleration to optimize SDWAN uCPE gateway performance. In addition to his background in SDN and virtual networking, Mark draws from broad technical experience ranging from HPC computation physics to embedded Java in which he has been a frequent presenter. He holds a Master of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering from Virginia Tech and has done doctoral work on applied Plasma Physics at the University of Michigan.

Renu Navale is Senior Director of the Edge Services and Industry Enabling Organization in the Network Platforms Group (NPG). She is responsible for leading various strategic efforts in edge computing, accelerating network transformation through technical innovation and ecosystem enabling activities via the Intel Network Builders program, by fostering industry wide collaboration through open source strategy and contributions and industry marketing. Renu has over twenty years of industry experience in networking, wireless, embedded, and software technologies. Previously, she was the Technical Assistant and Chief of Staff to Sandra Rivera, Senior Vice President, and General Manager of NPG. She has also led global cross-disciplinary teams in strategic planning, segment and software product marketing and software development initiatives at Intel. She has a proven record of driving strategies into execution, and building global teams with strong collaboration across other Intel organizations. Renu was the recipient of the Intel Achievement award in 2015.

 

Prior to Intel, Renu worked at Nokia (formerly Alcatel-Lucent) on Wireless, VOIP, and Network Management technologies. She is a twice recipient of Alcatel-Lucent’s highest Awards for software design and development innovation. She has also published papers on various Wireless Technologies.

 

Renu holds an Executive MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management, a Master of Computer Science Engineering from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from Bangalore University, India.
